Back to School Newsletter - Fall 2021

August 4, 2021

Dear Riverdale Families,

Welcome to an exciting new school year!  Whether you are returning from a year of online learning, were a student in person last year, or are new to Riverdale altogether, we are so extremely excited to begin this school year together in the building, and we cannot wait to see our scholars soon! At Riverdale our staff is committed to prepare each scholar for college and career, and our school motto continues to be: Every Student Matters ~ Every Moment Counts.  You have probably heard your scholar recite our Mission Statement a time or two… At Riverdale Elementary we are career-bound scholars going from good to better to best to achieve success.

At this time our school district has communicated a few safety guidelines for the year.  It is recommended that students wear masks, but not required. All staff are required to wear masks while inside the building.  Any visitors or volunteers must wear a mask to enter the building.  We will continue to communicate with you any time we receive new safety guidelines.

We are thrilled to invite each family to meet their teacher and bring in supplies at our Back to School Night!  This event will be held on Monday, August 16th from 4:00-6:00pm.  Please plan to stop by for an informal visit during that time.  Parents may enter the building with their scholar, as long as you are wearing a mask.  In order to see who your child’s teacher is, please be sure to have completed the online registration by August 9th.  To access the registration please click here: Online Registration

The first day of school will be on Wednesday, August 18th.  We are planning a celebratory start to the morning, and unlike any other year we ask students to find their teacher sign in the front of the building and line up with their teacher.  Parents are welcome to stay and watch as we cheer each class back to school through the front entrance!

I’d like to take a moment to highlight areas regarding school safety, homework, and communication at Riverdale.  Please read the following notes, and let us know if you should have any questions.

Arriving at Riverdale: Parents are welcome to park and walk your scholar onto campus, or use our Hug and Go on Elm Drive/108th Avenue directly in front of the school.  Please remember, cars may not be parked in the Hug and Go area in the mornings, as this is intended for drop off purposes only.  Our front gate closes at 7:50.  At that time, only buses and vehicles with handicap parking may enter our parking lots.

Morning Arrival and Supervision: Our first bell rings at 8:00, and the tardy bell rings at 8:05.  Instruction begins promptly at 8:05, so it is important that our scholars arrive to school on time and ready to learn.  Staff will be positioned on our campus to provide supervision in the mornings between 7:55-8:05. It is extremely important that scholars not be on campus before 7:55, unless they are coming for breakfast.

Breakfast: All meals are free to students this school year! Breakfast begins at 7:45, and students should line up to enter at the front door.  Breakfast students should not arrive prior to 7:45 as there will be no supervision before that time.

Afternoon Dismissal: In an effort to assure all scholars and staff are safe at all times, please see the dismissal policies below:

  • Vehicles may park in the Hug and Go lane during dismissal
  • Any vehicle with a handicap license may park in our handicap spots in the front of the building prior to the gates closing at 2:45, and at 1:30 on Wednesdays, however, you will not be released from the parking lot until all scholars have safely exited our campus
  • Vehicles may not park in the bus lane in front of the building at any time
  • Any cars parked in the gated areas must stay idle, and may not leave until the gates have been open and drivers are motioned to exit when the lots are clear of scholars and staff
  • Please call our front office if you have questions about our dismissal policies, and thank you for keeping our scholars and staff safe at all times

Visitors in the Building: Adults may only enter the building if they are wearing a mask, and must wear the mask during the entire visit while in the building.

Free and Reduced Benefits: All families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced benefits for the 2021-2022 school year. By applying for these benefits families may receive waived or reduced school fees such as field trips, can qualify for additional resources such as medical and/or food and cash assistance, and can receive community support.  And, Riverdale receives additional funding to help enhance the learning environment for all students! For more information and to apply, please click here: Free and Reduced Lunch application

Animals on Campus: We know that pets are part of our families, and are well loved!  However, animals are not permitted on school grounds.  For the safety of all our students please leave your furry friends at home and do not bring them on campus.

Our Homework Policy: At Riverdale Elementary, we believe evenings after school should be spent playing outside, eating dinner as a family and reading together. After our staff conducted much research around homework, we found there to be little correlation between homework and student performance. Therefore, Riverdale has embraced a no homework policy.  Scholar’s homework will only consist of makeup work due to absences, interventions agreed upon by teacher and parent, and reading at home each night.

Newsletters and Events: Please check our Riverdale website regularly as it is chalk full of upcoming events, classroom and school news, PTO information, and important highlights at Riverdale.  Our website will be the hub for school information, as we are hoping to save trees and communicate with parents more directly.  You may also receive emails from the school office or your child’s teacher.  Please let us know if your email address has changed so that we can be sure to keep you posted!
